Across Germany, an alarming number of trees are falling ill and dying. Over the past two years 180,000 hectares of forest have disappeared, linked to extreme weather events and the proliferation of an aggressively spreading bark beetle.
More than 11,000 scientists from around the world have backed research that says the world is facing a climate emergency. The study, based on 40 years of data, says governments are failing to address the crisis. Writing in the journal Bioscience, the group says scientists have a moral obligation to warn humanity of catastrophic threats. Doctor Thomas Newsome from the University of Sydney is one of the lead authors. He says it’s not too late to act, but time is running out.

Parts of Australia face an unprecedented threat as more than 100 bushfires burn across coastal New South Wales and Queensland. Communities on NSW’s mid-north coast and the far north coast are battling the worst of the conditions which have created an orange-red glow over the fire-threatened city of Port Macquarie.
